Indenting Text

Article ID: KB101312

What not to do:

The easiest way to indent text is to use the indent buttons in the toolbar:

However, this is not recommended, unless the text indented is meant to be a block quotation.

Why? Using the indent button results in the <blockquote> tag being used. This HTML tag is really meant for labeling block quotations, not as an indentation tool. The best way to indent text is to use style sheets.

Indenting Text the "Right" Way

To indent one paragraph, you may use FrontPage's formatting commands. (If you want more than one paragraph to be indented, and want indentation on several pages of your site, look into creating an external style sheet.)

  1. Click in the paragraph that you wish to indent.
  2. Go to Format > Paragraph.
  3. Change the "Before text" field to a pixel amount (20 is a good number to start with).
  4. If you also want there to be a right-side indentation, put a value in the "After text" field as well.
  5. If you want the first line to be indented, put a value in the "Indent first line" field.
  6. Click OK to apply your changes.

Behind the Scenes: How it works

When you use the Paragraph dialog box to create indents, FrontPage inserts HTML code for an inline style. The style code looks something like this:

Indented paragraph here...
As you can see, the first line is indented.
This paragraph is indented 30 pixels, and the first line is indented 20 pixels more.

<p style="margin-left: 30px; text-indent: 20px">
Indented paragraph here...<br>
As you can see, the first line is indented.<br>
This paragraph is indented 30 pixels, and the first line is indented 20 pixels more.</p>

The margin-left: 30px essentially creates a "margin" is created on the left side, pushing the text inward so that it looks like it is indented. The text-indent: 20px is the way to define a first-line indentation amount.
